Super Heroes of Smut: Dr. J

Superheroes Blank

I have a special guest today, the scintillating siren of smut – Dr. J, who is the first to participate in what I hope to be a series called “Super Heroes of Smut” – where erotica writers talk shop. Let’s get right to it, shall we? But first, a bit about the good Doctor:

Dr. J. arrived at her writing career after being a condom packer, sex therapist, and finally a college professor of human sexuality. Using her vast knowledge and experience of sexuality and the mind, she continues her education efforts through her stories to integrate positive sexuality into the human experience. Living the island life on the Atlantic coast, Dr. J. plays petanque, knits, and supports all the visual and performing arts of the area.

And now, the interview:

Oleander Plume: How long have you been writing (erotica or otherwise)?

Dr.J: For most of my professional life, my writing was academic. I started writing erotica in November 2015, and I put my first story out in the world the last day of December 2015. That is a year and a half of creating naughty stories. The time has flown.

OP: Wow, a year and a half?? Impressive! Let’s talk a bit about your writing process. Do you prefer outlining your story, or do you just sit down and start typing?

DJ: When the story idea zaps my brain, it’s like I parachute into the scene and start there. I think my therapist background engages. I have no preconceived ideas, so I let the story unfold as I listen to the characters tell the story.  After I have a draft, I look at the story for where more questions are needed to make sure the characters feel full with wants, needs, and desires.

OP: How many hours per week do you dedicate to writing?

DJ: Would you believe I think I dedicate every waking hour to writing? With retirement, I have the luxury to set up my schedule anyway I like. When I converse on social media, ideas spark. Reading and research sparks ideas, too. So if I look at it as a whole, my conscious and unconscious self is always working the writing process. Dream sequences even add to storylines. I probably sit in the chair typing at least three-four hours a day for a specific story.

OP: Yes, I would believe that you dedicate every waking hour to writing! But time well spent, as your stories are well-crafted. Let’s talk books – I understand you’re a voracious reader. When you sit down to read a book, what keeps you turning pages – and – what makes you slam the book shut?

DJ: Page turning is accomplished when I can jump in the characters’ skin, in the scene, and in their life. I want to be consumed by their world and escape there. They might be my friend or family. If the character is hollow or missing and I don’t feel a magnetic pull drawing me forward with a story, I slam the book shut.

OP: Is there a sub-genre of erotica you haven’t explored yet, and if so, what is it?

I haven’t explored Western erotica yet. I had a photo shoot with a hunk of a model. We provided different types of props for his attire. A cowboy hat picture highlights his bare chest, ripped abs, and tight jeans. It’s the perfect book cover and visual for my cowboy erotica inspiration. I need a little research to put the story altogether, but I have some ideas.

OP: Okay, I need to hear more about this photo shoot! Cowboys, mmm…wait, where was I? Oh, right, the interview. *blush* Before I let you go, can you tell us about your latest projects?

DJ: I have several projects in the works.

First, I am three-quarters through my first draft of my novel. The working title is Pleasure Buds. It’s about a sex educator/researcher, Dr. Indigo Lang, who lands her dream job to create positive sexuality education in a small conservative Florida town but to win over the community she must form an unexpected alliance that risks her heart with hot pharmaceutical CEO Everett Jordan Lea.

Second, I have a collaboration with the ever sexy, Mischa Eliot, about a current-day destination brothel experience.

Third, I’m working on a sports erotica novella about a threesome that occurs during a petanque tournament. Most people don’t know I have played in international petanque games. (Petanque is similar to bocce ball but French). My life experiences play a direct role in creating settings for my stories.

Lastly, I write erotic short stories following any whim that strikes me.
